| Description |
| The following hoax has been distributed in French. The hoax claims that users should avoid opening a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation called "Welcome to the matrix.pps". Some versions of the hoax claim to come from a security team at Microsoft. Sophos would like to point out to computer users that although at the time of writing there is no virus which exhibits the characteristics described below, there are viruses which distribute themselves with similar filenames and that all unsolicited email attachments should be treated with suspicion. The text of the hoax reads as follows: Vous pouvez recevoir un mail apparemment insignifiant présenté comme un fichier Power Point nommé "Welcome to the matrix.pps". Le virus a été créé par un pirate français appelé "Nwin27" The hoax has been translated into Dutch as follows: VIRUS WAARSCHUWING !!!! The hoax has also been translated into Swedish as follows: Om du får ett mail från Powerpoint presentation 'Welcome to the matrix pps..' så ska du ABSOLUT INTE öppna det! |

Many virus hoaxes:
As usual, you are urged not to pass on warnings of this kind, as the continued re-forwarding of these hoaxes simply wastes time and email bandwidth. It is possible that you may receive a hoax via email with a file attached. Obviously, such file attachments should be treated with caution as they may be virus infected. Sophos recommends deleting virus hoax emails, whether they contain file attachments or not. Sophos suggests a policy to help prevent hoaxes from spreading in your company. |
