Virus identity (IDE) files: using on Macintosh computers

This product is nearing retirement. We strongly recommend that you upgrade in order to ensure your protection stays fully up to date.

Using Sophos Anti-Virus virus identity (IDE) files on Macintosh OS 8 and OS 9.

What to do

Updating a single workstation

  1. Copy the IDE files into the System Folder|Preferences|Sophos folder.
  2. If the InterCheck on-access scanner is installed, restart the Macintosh to load the new identities.
  3. If the on-demand scanner only is installed, launch it (or re-launch it) to load the new identities.

Updating a server

Note: Old IDE files are not automatically deleted from a Central Installation Directory (CID). Delete them before adding IDEs for the correct version.

  1. Delete any old IDE files from the macinst|IDE folder on the server containing the CID.
  2. Copy the IDE files into the macinst|IDE folder on the server.
    • The on-demand scanner checks for new IDE files each time it is launched.
    • The InterCheck on-access scanner checks each time the Macintosh is started.
  3. You will be prompted to restart the Macintosh, or re-launch the on-demand scanner, as appropriate.

How to confirm that the IDE files have been loaded

Open Sophos Anti-Virus and expand the details at the base of the screen. The IDEs currently in use will be displayed.
