Advisory: patching the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE)
The version of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) included in PureMessage for Windows/Exchange, Small Business Suite, and EM Reporter should be kept up-to-date with the most recent patches.
Products affected:
- PureMessage for Windows/Exchange
- Sophos
Anti-Virus Small Business Edition - PureMessage Small Business Edition
- EM Reporter.
What to do
Updating MSDE
The latest security patches for Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) can be obtained from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx.
- In the drop-down box select 'Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000)'.
- You should read the bulletin for, and install, the top patch on the list: MS03-031.
Keeping Windows up to date
You should check for updates to Windows frequently:
- Subscribe to Microsoft security alerts.
- Check the Microsoft security bulletins page.
- On single computers, visit Windows Update.
You can use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer version 1.2 to check for out-of-date components on your system. This program can check your computer for the majority of current patches. Exceptions will be mentioned in the relevant security bulletin.
