The following error codes and messages may be encountered when installing, updating or running Sophos AutoUpdate on computers running the current versions of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+, and Sophos
Microsoft error codes
Some Microsoft error codes may be encountered. These are among the more common ones.

| 0x8000ffff | Catastrophic failure | Uninstall and reinstall, checking that a supported operating system is in use, that the account has sufficient rights and that the folder can be written to. |
| 0x8004000f | Invalid window handle | Restart the computer. Then repeat the installation or upgrade. |
| 0x80070002 | The system cannot find the file specified | Check that the required folder can be written to by the workstation. |
| 0x80070004 | The system cannot open the file | Check the permissions on the file and on the folder it is in. |
| 0x80070005 | General access denied error | Check the rights and permissions of the account. |
| 0x80070006 | Invalid handle | Restart the computer. Then repeat the installation or upgrade. |
| 0x8007000e | Ran out of memory | Close one or more programs and try again. Check that your computer conforms to the system requirements. |
| 0x80070057 | One or more arguments are invalid | Close one or more programs and try again. If necessary, restart the computer then try again. |
| 0x80070070 | There is not enough space on the disk | Check the amount of space on the disk and that you are installing to the intended disk. |
| 0x8007007e | The specified module could not be found | Uninstall and reinstall. Check the rights and permissions of the account. |
Sophos error codes

| 80040f00 | Cache directory does not exist or is unreadable | Run the update again. This should create or update the cache folder. |
| 80040f01 | Unexpected system error (e.g. could not read from registry) | Run the update again. It may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall. |
| 80040f02 | Package authentication failed | Run the update again. The package became corrupt during download. |
| 80040f03 | Could not find the setup plug-in for the package | Run the update again. The package became corrupt during download. |
| 8007000e | Out of memory, or other system resource | Check available memory and hard disk space. Your computer should conform to the system requirements. |
| 8000ffff | Unknown exception | Run the update again. It may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall. |
| 80041f00 | Plug-in setup failed - general non-specific error | Delete the cache folder and run the update again. |
| 80041f01 | Setup timeout | The setup program has hung, failed or taken too much time. Check network connections and the number of licences. |
| 80041f02 | Another anti-virus product is present | Remove the other anti-virus software before installation. |
| 80041f03 | Could not find some files in the cache that were needed or expected | Run the update again. If necessary, delete the cache folders. |
| 80041f05 | Cache file corrupt | A file in the cache did not have the expected format. Run the update again. This should create or update the files in the cache folder. |
| 80041f06 | A necessary registry entry was missing or malformed | Uninstall and reinstall. |
| 80041f07 | Service error | For example, could not contact the Sophos AutoUpdate Agent service or restart the Sophos |

A setup program has failed with a non-specific error. Uninstall and reinstall. |
| 80041f0a | MSI upgrade failure when installing or upgrading | This is reported when the Microsoft Software Installer has failed. Download a current version of MSI from the Microsoft website. |
| 80041f0b | MSI version error | The windows installer service is missing, or too old. Download a current version of MSI from the Microsoft website. |
| 80041f0c | Incorrect operating system | Installation attempted on an unsupported operating system. |
| 80041f0d | Missing dependency | An operating system component (e.g. Internet Explorer) was missing or too old. Upgrade Internet Explorer, or any other affected component. |
| 80041f0e | Installation failed because of lack of memory | Close one or more programs and try again. Check that your computer conforms to the system requirements. |
| 80041f0f | Installation ran out of disk space | Check the amount of space on the disk and that you are installing to the intended disk. |
| 80041f10 | Installation was cancelled by the user | Reinstall. |
| 80041f11 | Access denied (e.g. because the user has insufficient privileges) | Install using an account with greater rights, e.g. local administrator. |
| 80041f12 | Reboot required to complete the installation | Reboot the computer. |
| 80042f00 | Unexpected system error (e.g. could not read from registry) | Uninstall and reinstall. |
| 80042f01 | The plug-in host could not be copied or started | Run the update again. If necessary, uninstall and reinstall. |
| 80042f02 | Could not create, clear or set permissions on, or copy to, the temp directory. | Check that there is a temp directory with available space and that the user has sufficient rights over it. |
| 80042f03 | Too many concurrent installations (could not find a spare temp directory). | Check to see if there is an installation already present, for temp directory space, and for rights and permissions. |
| 80042f05 | A previous update is still running. | Stop any update currently running, or wait for it to finish. If this fails, reboot then attempt an update. |
| 80041f12 | An installation could not run successfully because a previous installation, run by AutoUpdate on a Sophos product, required a reboot, and that reboot has not yet been done. | Reboot the computer |
