Installing Sophos Anti-Virus current versions in a NetWare environment

Enterprise Console can only be used to manage significant numbers of computers on a Windows 2000/2003 server.

You can install Enterprise Console on a Windows XP workstation, or use the EM Library standalone installer, to install on networks with no Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server, but you will need to pay attention to any potential Microsoft Client Access Licence (CAL) issues. The installation process is identical.

A separate article outlines Novell Directory Services (NDS) support.

Note: Sophos strongly recommends the use of Novell-supplied NetWare clients on Windows computers, rather than the Microsoft NetWare clients.

Installing Sophos Anti-Virus version 4.6 and version 6.0 in a NetWare environment

Use the NetWare network startup guide to install the following Sophos Anti-Virus versions on your NetWare and Windows network:

How updating takes place

Whenever EM Library downloads updates from Sophos, it will update the files in \\<NWserver>\SYS\SWEEP\NLMINST. Sophos Anti-Virus for NetWare will subsequently perform an automatic 'hot update', during which it:

When SWEEP.NLM itself is updated, the new version is loaded as the client application reloads the API.

Managing computers without the Enterprise Console

Even if you do not use Enterprise Console to manage the software on your Windows computers, you can use it to pre-configure the software.

Use the tool, exportconfig.exe, available from the Sophos Anti-Virus CD, to export the updating and anti-virus policies to two XML files. Each XML file includes the policy information needed for all operating systems in the computer group.

Place the XML files in the directories to which Sophos Anti-Virus and Sophos AutoUpdate (the updating component) will be installed and updated.

There are different directories for each operating system in the group.

For Windows 2000/XP/2003 computers

For Windows NT4 computers

For Windows 95/98/Me computers

Use the tool, configcid.exe, available from the Sophos Anti-Virus CD, to add the configuration files to the update list.

Install the computers manually, or with a script.
