Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: despite a successful update, Sophos AutoUpdate reports "Update has failed"
Despite a successful update in Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+, the Sophos AutoUpdate shield icon can sometimes display a white cross in a red circle and the message "Update has failed" can be present in the system tray. However, the shield icon will remain blue, as Sophos
This will only happen where:
- The primary update location cannot be contacted
- The computer is managed by Enterprise Console (i.e. RMS is installed)
- The secondary update location is Sophos (i.e. the Sophos webCID).
The cause is that Sophos Remote Management System (RMS) is not available in the Sophos webCID. As a result, Sophos AutoUpdate cannot locate the package that it is seeking.
The message will stop being displayed the next time the computer updates from the primary location.
What to do
Company webCIDs contain RMS. So no computer that uses a company webCID for updates, rather than the Sophos webCID, will encounter this error.
