Sophos PureMessage Small Business Edition: hourly spam rule updates available

You can now receive hourly updates to your Sophos PureMessage Small Business Edition spam rules, direct from Sophos. Hourly updates provide increased protection against the latest spamming techniques.

If you normally receive updates via the Sophos Control Center, you will receive spam rules updates at the same time as anti-virus definition updates (about 6-8 times a day). Sophos recommends that you configure PureMessage to receive spam updates directly via Sophos AutoUpdate. This will enable your system to update hourly.

What to do

Work through the following procedures to ensure that PureMessage obtains hourly updates direct from Sophos. If PureMessage is already configured as described below, you do not need to take any further action.

Carry out these procedure on your management computer, where the PureMessage console is installed. Locate the Sophos AutoUpdate icon (the blue shield) in the system tray. Right-click the icon to display a menu and select 'Configure updating' to display the 'Properties for Sophos AutoUpdate' dialog box.

Setting a source for updates

  1. Select the 'Primary server' tab.
  2. Select 'Sophos', this will download updates directly from Sophos via the internet.
  3. Enter your User name and Password. If the user name needs to be qualified to indicate the domain, use the form domain\username.
  4. Click 'Apply'.
  5. If you access the internet via a proxy server, click 'Proxy Details' and enter the required information.
  6. Click 'OK'.

Configure your secondary server details as appropriate.

Scheduling updates

  1. Select the 'Schedule' tab. Select 'Enable automatic updates' to configure PureMessage to update itself at hourly intervals.
  2. In the box called 'Check for updates every', enter 60. This specifies the frequency (in minutes) with which PureMessage will check for updated software. Click 'OK'.

If you have concerns about the load on your internet connection, you can reduce the frequency of updates by entering a higher figure (minutes) in the 'Check for updates every' box.
If you update via a dial-up connection to the internet, select 'Check for updates on dial-up'. PureMessage will attempt to update whenever you connect to the internet.

For more information, refer to the section 'Updating', in the Sophos PureMessage Small Business Edition User Manual.
