Enterprise Console: attempt to upgrade an EM Library 1.2 library fails

In some circumstances a situation can occur where Sophos Enterprise Console version 2 is installed on a computer on which there is no EM Library console, but there is an EM Library version 1.2 library.
If you then attempt to use the Enterprise Console installer to install EM Library version 1.3 on that computer, although the console will be installed, the existing library will not be upgraded to version 1.3. The Central Installation Directory (CID) that belonged to EM Library 1.2 will not be managed by Enterprise Console.
If you subsequently attempt to force an upgrade to EM Library 1.3 by replacing the snap-in, the upgrade will fail.
What to do
- Open EM Library version 1.3 (if necessary, use the Enterprise Console installer to install it).
- Select Tools|Create Library.
- Install a library for version 1.3 on top of your old version 1.2 library. Your old library will be upgraded.
Technical details
How this situation can occur
This can happen if you do not opt to upgrade EM Library at the same time as you install Enterprise Console:
- EM Library version 1.2 is already installed, but without Enterprise Console.
- You download the Enterprise Console version 2 software, and start to install it.
- When installing, you do not opt to install EM Library version 1.3.
- The installer nonetheless uninstalls the EM Library version 1.2 console.
- You then attempt to install EM Library version 1.3 retrospectively by replacing the snap-in.
This situation could also occur if you installed Enterprise Console, version 2, on a computer that previously held a child library.
What happens when you try to force an upgrade
If you have an EM Library 1.3 console with an EM Library 1.2 library on the same computer, and remove the EM Library snap-in with the intention of replacing it with version 1.3, you will get a series of error messages:
This EM Library version cannot use a "Frequent updates" schedule. If you want to use this type of schedule, you must upgrade EM Library. Do you want to upgrade?
If you click 'Yes' and 'Next', you get another error message.
The computer name you've entered is the local machine. If you want to install on the local machine please click OK and then Back.
You can click 'OK', however the 'Back' button is then grayed out.
