Sophos PureMessage SBE: running with Microsoft Management Console 3.0

When attempting to install Sophos PureMessage Small Business Edition, version 2.5.1, the following error is returned:

'MMC cannot initialize the snap-in.'

This error occurs when you install Sophos PureMessage Small Business Edition, version 2.5.1, on a computer running Microsoft Management Console 3.0 (MMC 3.0).

What to do

You should upgrade now to the latest version of Sophos PureMessage Small Business Edition, which addresses this issue.

If you choose not to upgrade, the workaround described below is available.

You should install another instance of the PureMessage console on a computer that is not running MMC 3.0. You do not need to uninstall the existing installation.

  1. At the computer on which you want to install the PureMessage console, check which version of MMC, if any, is installed.
    • Click Start|Run, type MMC, then click OK.
    • In the Console window, click Help|About Microsoft Management Console. The version number is displayed.
  2. Install the PureMessage console on this computer. To do this, follow the instructions given in the PureMessage Small Business Edition startup guide, in the section 'Installing a PureMessage console on a separate computer'.

Note: At the time of writing, MMC 3.0 is only distributed with Windows Server 2003 R2. Therefore, you will only see this issue if you are running this particular server software with PureMessage Small Business Edition, version 2.5.1.
