PureMessage for Windows/Exchange: error 1603 displayed during installation

During the installation or upgrade of PureMessage for Windows Exchange, version 2.6.1, you see the following error message:

Error 1603
Fatal error during installation
Please consult Windows installer help for further information

What to do

  1. Open Windows Services.
  2. Stop the 'Microsoft Exchange Information Store' service.
  3. Run the installation/upgrade of PureMessage for Windows/Exchange, again.

Note: this error may also be seen in conjunction with the error:

Error initialising quarantine database.
