Enterprise Console: managed upgrade from Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows version 6
IMPORTANT
Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ version 6 will be retired on 31 May 2008. To ensure that your protection stays up to date, you should upgrade now.
Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ version 6 with Application Control was retired in October 2007. You should no longer attempt to maintain this version, you should instead now upgrade to Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ version 7.
This article describes what you will need to do if you want to upgrade to Enterprise Console version 3 or above, but continue to use Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ version 6, managing the upgrade of your central installation directories (CIDs) manually.
- To manage the update process, you will need to use fixed packages. This process is described in section 4.3, 'Before you upgrade using a phased rollout scenario', of the Sophos network upgrade guide.
- A knowledgebase article describes the different databanks available.
- You can manage version 6 packages with Enterprise Console version 3.
- You are strongly advised to upgrade to Enterprise Console version 3, regardless.
What to do
To manage the update process, do as follows.
- In EM Library 1.3, select 'Select Packages'.
- Right-click the 'Sophos
Anti-Virus for Windows v6.x.x' IDEs only package. Select 'Subscribe'. - When prompted to create a central installation directory (CID), select 'Yes' and follow through the wizard.
- When prompted for the CID location, select 'Custom CID location' and change the name of the CID (for example use \\servername\InterChk\ESXP_fixed instead of \\servername\InterChk\ESXP).
- Once the CID has been created, select 'Download packages' to populate the CID.
- In Enterprise Console, edit any relevant updating policies so that computers currently using the Sophos
Anti-Virus version 6 'latest' package will point to the new CID.
If you are using child libraries, you must publish the fixed package so that it is available for subscription from your child libraries. You must then perform the above process for all child libraries.
Note: Fixed packages are only maintained for three months. If you do not migrate all of your computers to Sophos
After you upgrade
Once you have upgraded to Enterprise Console version 3, as described in the network upgrade guide:
- Open the new version of EM Library.
- Choose 'Select Parent', and select http://es-central-3.sophos.com/update.
- Then choose 'Select Packages'. You will have been subscribed to the Sophos
Anti-Virus version 7.x package automatically. However, your fixed package will remain subscribed to version 6.x, and your networked computers will update from your SophosAnti-Virus version 6.x fixed CID.
Moving to Sophos Anti-Virus version 7
When you upgrade your computers to Sophos
- Use Enterprise Console 3.0 to create new policies for use with the Sophos
Anti-Virus version 7.x CID. - Move computers to the new group at your own pace. They will then upgrade to Sophos
Anti-Virus 7.x.
Technical details
If you upgrade to Enterprise Console version 3, from Enterprise Console version 2, and you configure EM Library to point to the new es-latest-3.sophos.com databank, your current Sophos
